Apparatus controlling handover for efficient packet buffering in wimax network and method thereof

Abstract

A handover control method for efficient buffering in a WiMAX network and an apparatus for the same are provided to prevent a waste of resources without unnecessary buffering by making a serving RAS(Radio Access Station) buffer packets to be delivered to an MS(Mobile Station) until a path is established between an ACR(Access Control Router) and a target RAS after handover is started and making the ACR buffer packets until the handover is completed after the path is established. An MS, which prepares for handover, sends a MOB-MSHO-REQUEST message to a serving RAS(S301). The serving RAS transmits an HO-Request message to an ACR, and the ACR relays the HO-Request message to a plurality of target RASs(S302). Each target RAS judges whether it can accomodate the MS, and transmits an HO-response message to the ACR. The ACR relays the HO-response messages to the serving RAS(S303). The serving RAS transmits a MOB-BSHO-RSP message to the MS(S304). In response to the HO-response messages, the serving RAS transmits an HO-ACK message to the ACR(S305). The HO-ACK message is delivered to each target RAS through the ACR(S306). After transmitting the HO-ACK message, the serving RAS starts buffering packets to be transmitted to the MS(S307). The MS determines a target RAS for handover, transmits a MOB-HO-IND message to the serving RAS, and opens a handover procedure(S308). The serving RAS transmits an HO-confirm message to the ACR(S309).
본 발명은 와이맥스 네트워크에서의 효율적인 버퍼링을 위한 핸드오버 제어 방법 및 그 제어 장치에 의하면 서빙 RAS와 ACR이 소정의 메시지 교환 과정 전후에 각각 핸드오버하려는 이동 단말로 전송될 패킷을 나누어 버퍼링하는 단계와 이동 단말이 핸드오버를 완료한 경우, 상기 ACR은 서빙 RAS가 버퍼링하던 패킷과 자신이 버퍼링했던 패킷을 순차적으로 타겟 RAS로 터널링하는 단계를 통하여 ACR 및 RAS에서 불필요한 버퍼링을 수행하지 않으므로 자원의 낭비를 초래하지 않는다는 효과를 얻을 수 있다.
